So, the elephants have been left alone for quite a while. Right before Tobin born and my parents were here, the elephants got some attention. Papa and Joshua were contently playing together while I painted when the phone rang. While I was on the phone, Joshua snuck into the room and picked up the paintbrushes to add his artistic talents to the wall. Thankfully he didn't get any on the carpet. The event was pretty discouraging so the supplies were packed up and put away for another month.
Last week they finally came back out and I spent about an hour fixing the elephant. The shading has been very challenging and the duo have been painted over and over in an attempt to get it just right. Yesterday I worked on them and finally got to a finishing point. I say a finishing point because I still wasn't thrilled with them, but it was time to let it go. Kurt and Joshua came home from the park so I cleaned up my brushes and went to join them for lunch. My mistake was in leaving the closed container of paints in his room. Yep, you guessed it. Kurt put the man down for his nap. When he woke up, Kurt went in to find the little Picasso busy at work. With bright orange paint.
I didn't take a picture of the immediate damage because Kurt was pretty mad. That and we had to call poison control because he had it in his mouth. The good news is, acrylic paint isn't toxic. Next was a round of calls to a carpet cleaner, but we would pay a lot of money with no guarantee that the paint would come out. So Kurt worked on it for about 10 minutes before giving up. Now we will be looking for a fun jungle-themed rug to cover the damage.
Fortunately for me Kurt feels a little responsibility as he noticed the container when putting Joshua down but didn't think anything of it. So, Tobin's the only one in the house that didn't contribute to the incident. Kurt stated that if it's the worse thing he ever does we'll be okay. I'm pretty sure it won't be the worst thing he ever does. Just wait until he has his driver's license...

I cannot believe my eyes!!! That poor baby elephant is destined for extinction! Your carpet....there are no words....
It was painful to keep reading. I think you should just paint the whole carpet orange and go with it.
wow, that's a big mess. it's awful, but at the same time slightly hilarious. poor elephant. poor carpet.
We have experience installing tile, steam cleaning, and carpet installation. Give us a call.
Suz, the elephants might be the cutest animals EVER!!! Even with the orange that Joshua added! I say get a cute throw rug for in front of his bed and fix up the elephants when you get a chance again...they are so cute! I'm so proud to have a friend who can paint jungle murals!!!
From Joshua's Uncle Jeffrey:
It sounds like Joshua has found his passion for installation art.
From Wikipedia> Installation art uses sculptural materials and
other media to modify the way a particular space is experienced.
Installation art is not necessarily confined to gallery spaces and can be any
material intervention in everyday public or private spaces. Installation
art incorporates almost any media to create an experience in a
particular environment.
Also he could be considered a performance artist, since he made
himself part of the piece.
Wow, I cannot imagine how I would feel after pouring so much time into those amazing murals. Very nice work Susan.
If it makes you feel any better, when we bought our house we discovered the previous owners failed to disclose a carpet stain in their child's bedroom. So we have one of those too and don't even have our own children yet (10 weeks to go though)! I will say it's not quite on the same scale but still it's a lovely carpet stain we try to hide.
Oh Joshua....what a creative little guy:) I think you should leave the orange tatoos on the elephants. You should just take some more orange paint and write the initials "JZ." I'm sure he just wanted to contribute:) I'll keep my eyes open for a cute jungle themed rug!
