#2 Don't try this at home

Welcome to Summer's Memorable Moments 2009, where we count down the craziness (and hope we finish before the new year...)!
#2 Don't try this at home

While I would love to say I'm a super crafty with this kids and love doing arts and crafts with them, it's not true. Honestly, I just don't feel like pulling out supplies, prepping, and then cleaning up for one or two kids to explore something for 4 minutes. When we have playgroups or friends over, I enjoy it, but not in our daily routine.

Last year, Joshua had a wonderful teacher that was all about a variety of sensory motor activities. She was not afraid of mess and it was awesome for the kids. One of the things they enjoyed doing was playing with shaving cream. She squirted some out on the table and they got to play, make shapes, and "draw" letters in it. Great idea considering shaving creme is pretty cheap and doesn't stain.

One day this summer, Joshua was checking out his latest "High Five" magazine when he saw directions for the month's hands-on activity. He pointed out the shaving cream and asked if he could do it. My mind screamed "NO," but there was really no reason why he couldn't. They boys were even still in their PJs for the day. So, I broke out a casserole dish, the shaving cream , and camera. Joshua had a ball playing with it.
I got some cute pictures and stepped away for a minute. That's when Joshua managed to fall off the bench. En route to hitting the floor, he smeared shaving cream on the table, bench and floor. No big deal, but Tobin saw this as his chance to get in on the action. Once his fingers were dirty, I figured there was no reason he couldn't play in it too, so I sat him on my lap next to Joshua. He was just starting to put his whole hand into the shaving creme when it happened. Puke. Everywhere. In the casserole dish, on me, on him, etc. I took a critical assessment of the situation and decided the best course of action was a bath for everyone. Of course, Joshua was not happy with the turn of events. I got Tobin to the bathroom and stripped him down. At this point, Joshua was rolling his little shaving cream covered body around on the carpet in a fit. I managed to get him to calm down and get him into the bathroom only to turn around and find Tobin peeing on the bath rug. So, in summery, our little sensory motor activity resulted in puke in the kitchen, shaving cream on the carpet, and pee on the bathmat.

And that my friends is why we pay for preschool.

I love it and you sum up why I don't often do crafts with the kiddos, either! We had to set up a time to have a friend of Kylie's over to make christmas ornaments because I refused to break out everything just for her to be done in 5 minutes!
