The DTR

The big DTR talk.

We've all had them. They are a necessary part of all romantic relationships. The "Defining The Relationship" talk. Joshua and Ava have been planning for a long time to marry each other. However, several months ago Ava informed Joshua that she did not want to marry him anymore. For a while he had anxiety over who his bride would be, but he is finally at peace with our advice that he may marry someone he hasn't met yet. J & A have continued to be friends and this new plan hasn't seemed to interfere much. Or so we thought.

Last Saturday Ava and her brothers were over to hang out. There was a lot of concern over who was going to sit next to whom, etc. etc. That's when the DTR happened.

A (to J): "I want you to sit next to me because you are my best friend."
J: "But you aren't going to marry me."
A: "We can still be friends."

J says nothing with a puzzled look on his face.

A: "My mom says I can marry whoever I want when I get older. I don't have to decide until I am older."

J continues to say nothing with a puzzled look on his face.

A: "Who are you going to marry?"

J appears to snap out of his puzzled fog.

J: "I don't know her name, but she has long hair that is lighter than yours. It's like mine (points to own hair). She wears a yellow shirt and blue shorts and I saw her at McDonalds's on vacation."

So there you have it. They both have their plans now and are content with being "just friends." For now anyway.

A "Wild" Good Time

At the beginning of the new year we found out one of my BFFs from high school was going to be in San Antonio for a weekend. We hopped in the car and met the Reiff clan for lunch. It was super quick, but still fun to catch up. Afterwards we headed to Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch. It's a drive through zoo, if you will. I've been playing around with the idea of digital scrapbooking, so here's a try at using Smile box. (It's got music, so turn on the speakers.)

Definitely dig Smilebox for sharing online, but it's pretty limited to how much you can tweek the designs they have set up, so I think I'll keep looking.

Potty Training Purgatory

Welcome to Summer's Memorable Moments 2009, where we count down the craziness .
Number 1: Potty Training Purgatory

I have to be honest. I don't want to write this post.

Potty Training. It was the major issue in our house for most summer. And the last year. Or was that the last year and a half-Who really remembers the details?

Problem #1)
Since becoming a Mom, I've been obsessed with potty training. I have no idea why, but the way other countries in this world deal with it and the way we do in the US is so different. And I need to confess, I have been critical of others potty training methods. I had friends who waited too long and had major power struggles. Their one piece of advice: start early. So, we first purchased Joshua a potty in May of 2007 at the ripe age of 18 months. He had shown interest in the process and I figured the intro couldn't hurt. After continued interested and a little consistency with peeing in the potty I did some research on methods of potty training. A friend of mine had used "Potty Training in Less than a Day" with great success, as had her sister-in-law and a few friends. So I checked out the book and prayed through it. One week in October of '07, at 23 months, we decided it was time to implement the method.
Maybe the tears over the new present should have been the first warning?
The Method
The method of "Potty Training in Less Than a Day" is one were you say good-bye to daytime diapers once and for all. You allow the kid to go naked or have some undies on. You stay home ALL DAY for SEVERAL DAYS. You teach a doll (or monkey in our case) to use the bathroom and give it a reward each time it goes. If the monkey, or child, has an accident they need to practice using the potty three times in a row. Once the monkey doll has gone through it, it's time for the kid. Meanwhile, the rewards for sitting and practicing are salty snacks and sweet juices, to get them practicing more often. Well that's all fine and dandy except that before we could get through the three practice runs, Joshua would have another accident. After two and a half days I was in constant tears and urgently calling everyone who had potty trained a child in the past decade. Then, we decided to throw in the towel. It was a hard call to make because everyone says if you give up it will take them forever. Others say if you push it, it will take them forever. I know it was the best decision for my health and the sanity of our home.
Check this Out!
The Next Round
The following summer, as Joshua turned 2 1/2, we decided it was time to start encouraging him to be diaper free again. Tobin was several months old and we were ready. Friends Jennifer and Esther were also planning D-Day (Goodbye to Diapers Day). We decided to shoot for the same week and we could have a party to celebrate at the end. I planned a cake in the shape of a toilet and we talked about what fun it was going to be. Jennifer was kind to note that I had a boy, so if we needed to wait another week for the party for Joshua to be finished, we could.

We were so naive.

All three of our kids proved to be fairly strong-willed in their lack of desire to conform to our plan.

Eventually, Joshua's girlfriends grew out of the accidents and into little ladies. Joshua never really moved out of the "my pants are wet and I'm sitting in pee, but I don't really care" phase. For a year.

The next year
The next year is a jumble of reward charts, treasure boxes, spankings (which you aren't supposed to do for accidents, but keep in mind we are talking A FULL YEAR here) , searches for the "right method," time outs, pediatrician visits, potty training resistance suggestions, etc., etc., We had days of dryness, for which he earned a treasure. After three dry days we all went out for ice cream. After seven dry days he would earn the coveted scooter. And yet, we just couldn't get past 4 days. Then we'd have several days in a row of multiple accidents. One day I saw a different pediatrician in the practice we go to who recommended play therapy. We decided to hold off until he got tubes in his ears, in hopes that this minor surgery would be the cure to every problem the boy had ever had. Really-we thought he would become an angel because other parents had transformations in their child.

But we didn't.

The Watch
On the last trip to the pediatrician-I (heart) that man- before giving up forever, he recommend Joshua wear a watch and set it every hour to remind himself to go the the bathroom. He, in all his wisdom, reminded me that there is no perfect approach to potty training; if there were someone would be a millionaire.

It worked!

It still took a few weeks to catch on, but then the clouds opened up. A ray of sunshine came shining down on our home. The sounds of angels singing could be heard for miles. (Okay, I'm being a little dramatic but it felt like that.) He earned his scooter and continued on for a 14 day stretch of dryness!!!

Mind you, we still have accidents from time to time. Recently, we've had to go back to using the watch. But I occasionally leave the house with out a another set of clothes (GASP!).

Round Two
A couple of months ago Tobin started showing a lot of interest in the potty. He pretty consistently pees in the potty before his bath. We actually had a two day stretch where he told us a few times he needed to pee and actually did! I'm just not ready to go there yet. Surely he'll figure it out on his own before kindergarten. Right?

Right?

#2 Don't try this at home

Welcome to Summer's Memorable Moments 2009, where we count down the craziness (and hope we finish before the new year...)!
#2 Don't try this at home

While I would love to say I'm a super crafty with this kids and love doing arts and crafts with them, it's not true. Honestly, I just don't feel like pulling out supplies, prepping, and then cleaning up for one or two kids to explore something for 4 minutes. When we have playgroups or friends over, I enjoy it, but not in our daily routine.

Last year, Joshua had a wonderful teacher that was all about a variety of sensory motor activities. She was not afraid of mess and it was awesome for the kids. One of the things they enjoyed doing was playing with shaving cream. She squirted some out on the table and they got to play, make shapes, and "draw" letters in it. Great idea considering shaving creme is pretty cheap and doesn't stain.

One day this summer, Joshua was checking out his latest "High Five" magazine when he saw directions for the month's hands-on activity. He pointed out the shaving cream and asked if he could do it. My mind screamed "NO," but there was really no reason why he couldn't. They boys were even still in their PJs for the day. So, I broke out a casserole dish, the shaving cream , and camera. Joshua had a ball playing with it.
I got some cute pictures and stepped away for a minute. That's when Joshua managed to fall off the bench. En route to hitting the floor, he smeared shaving cream on the table, bench and floor. No big deal, but Tobin saw this as his chance to get in on the action. Once his fingers were dirty, I figured there was no reason he couldn't play in it too, so I sat him on my lap next to Joshua. He was just starting to put his whole hand into the shaving creme when it happened. Puke. Everywhere. In the casserole dish, on me, on him, etc. I took a critical assessment of the situation and decided the best course of action was a bath for everyone. Of course, Joshua was not happy with the turn of events. I got Tobin to the bathroom and stripped him down. At this point, Joshua was rolling his little shaving cream covered body around on the carpet in a fit. I managed to get him to calm down and get him into the bathroom only to turn around and find Tobin peeing on the bath rug. So, in summery, our little sensory motor activity resulted in puke in the kitchen, shaving cream on the carpet, and pee on the bathmat.

And that my friends is why we pay for preschool.

Number 3: Extreme Bathroom Makeover

Welcome to Summer's Memorable Moments 2009, where we count down the craziness (and hope we finish before the new year...)!
#3: Extreme Bathroom Makeover

Okay, so it wasn't really the summer, it was actually late April. Anyway, Kurt went out of town for ONE NIGHT and I redid the boy's bathroom as a surprise to him. I did a little webisode with video and pictures of the event, but Kurt was afraid I would lose the few blog readers I have left if I actually posted it. So, here are some pics.

Sorry, I took a lot of video and very few pictures, so I had to take still shots from the video...they aren't very quality.

Merry Christmas!

We were hoping to get a nice video to bid you "Merry Christmas". We asked Joshua to sing and Tobin to stand next to him. What we got instead was a more true picture of the boys:

Number 4: Country Roads...

Welcome to Summer's Memorable Moments 2009, where we count down the craziness! (Yes, I've been a slacker...)

Take me Home, Country Roads (runways actually).

The end of August marked a trip home to Virginia, with a whirl through West Virginia.

Mimi, Papa, and I took the boys to The Hands on Museum in Johnson City. They had a ball, we could probably have spent hours upon hours there (as long as we could eat at some point!) Although Mimi and Papa raved about how improved it was, it was pretty much exactly how I remembered it. The noah's ark with real (stuffed) animals, the canal lock system, a big slide through the coal mine, and grocery store were always favorites of mine.

We headed up to West Virginia to see my grandmother and then visited with family at my uncle's farm. Uncle Mike took us for a hayride-it was awesome!!! It was the perfect day except that Kurt wasn't with us.
Joshua has a second cousin that was born within a week of him. It's always fun to snap pictures of them together.

August 2009-ha, ha. Actually Joshua's faking here so he'd match Michael Wayne.

We capped of the trip with a small 30th birthday BBQ given by Dad and Ellen. It was so fun to catch up with good friends!!! I felt so blessed by a fun evening.

Number 5: Heading for the Border (and back again)

Welcome to Summer's Memorable Moments 2009, where we count down the craziness! (Yes, I've been a slacker...)

This summer we decided to get the heck out of Texas and head to Missouri to meet Kurt's brothers and families for cabin camping. The boys did great on what I would consider their first official road trip. We found that as long as you have a DVD player and snacks, life is good.

We started out with Tour De McDonalds. We like to stop and play every few hours, so McDonalds seemed like a good idea. Except each one was progressively more dirty than the previous. Seriously. Why don't they clean the playgrounds? We also saw amazing scenery including GREEN Grass and GREEN corn. Amazing!

A few other amazing things occured on the trip, other than having a fabulous time. We experienced the strange feeling of cool air and actually saw moisture falling from the sky in the form of large drops-(I think they call it rain). Joshua and Tobin loved hanging with the cousins and it was actually pretty relaxing. When went to a super fun water park in which their lack of rules and regulations allowed any age child (baby?) to ride on the big waterslide with an adult. Tobin and Joshua loved it!!! All of those pics are with Steph (still in the camera?)

After packing it up, we stopped off in Little Rock to hang with our friends and former neighbors. The boys went wild together and we were treated to first rate Southern Hospitality.

Number 6: All American Boys

Welcome to Summer's Memorable Moments 2009, where we count down the craziness!

Fourth of July Fun

Fourth of July has been one of my favorite holiday for years. It's fun to be patriotic and eat yummy food, but also be able to spend it with friends. This year, the boys donned matching shirts as we headed out to our neighborhood party and parade. This is the first year since we've been here they had a parade and competition for decor. We hurriedly slapped some crape paper on Joshua's Big Wheels and Tobin's Cozy Coupe. They didn't do so hot on the parade, but we made it the first 100 feet. Reluctantly, but we made it. (Remind me next year to volunteer to take the pics while Kurt does the parade.) Anyway, Joshua ended up winning a prize, I think it's because he waved his flag continually during the judging. Go Lil JZ. He won a full sized football, which we discovered scares him if you throw it anywhere near his body. Oh well, he could probably still make it as a football player at U of Delaware. My cute goofy boys!

The parade.

After naps, we headed to a friend/coworker's party we we actually let the boys stay up for fireworks. I know, Zeb clan goes wild and crazy! Here's Tobin with friends:

Number 7:Big Brother's Watching You

Welcome to Summer's Memorable Moments 2009, where we count down the craziness!

Why 3 year-olds don't make good babysitters

Showering as a mom can sometimes prove to be difficult. But when you throw in kid number 2, they turn into a precious commodity. Gym mornings aren't an issue because I can shower when both boys are taking their afternoon nap. But if we are planning a morning out and about or meeting up with friends, it sure is nice to be clean, with make-up and hair done. So, the adventure begins. Since Tobin stopped taking a morning nap, it has worked pretty well to set Joshua up with a movie and Tobin with toys in the bathroom. However, given his recent fascination with the toilet and ability to turn the garden tub water on, it's become how-fast-can-I-shower-while-saying "NO Tobin" over-and-over.

On one of these mornings, Tobin was playing very contently with the train table and Joshua was watching something (educational, of course). I hated to remove Tobin and pin him in the bathroom, so I asked Joshua if he would be willing to watch out for him. Joshua nodded his cute little head at me and went back to watching his show. I reminded him to come get me if there were any problems. Again, a head nod. So off I went. After taking what probably turned into a long shower, lost in the peace of the moment, I turned off the water and could immediately hear Tobin SCREAMING. I rushed out expecting to find Joshua torturing him. Tobin, poor kid, had his arm stuck in a kitchen chair and couldn't move. Joshua was still glued to his TV show, apparently completely CLUELESS that his brother was in a state of peril. My exasperated comment to him about his lack of care for his brother was met with a blank stare and a "huh?" Completely clueless. And that my friends, is why 3 year-olds don't make good babysitters.

Number 8: We've got moves you've never seen before

Welcome to Summer's Memorable Moments 2009, where we count down the craziness!

Here at the ranch we love to crank the tunes and do a little jiving. The boys take after their daddy with their funky dance moves. The best is when they can find things to accessories, like daddy's clean clothes in the below pictures.

Here's a compilation of a few dance parties this summer.
